I am not an ecologist, but…

recycle.jpeg Today, it happened, was to be the date of the biannual(ish) cleaning of my room. I am not so much the fan the cleaning process. In fact, it has been quite some time since the last time I gave the room a thorough cleansing. As such, quite a bit of “stuff” has built up over the past few months. I’ve accumulated piles and stacks of papers and documents, empty bottles, junk mail, and pieces of projects worked on throughout the year. (Do not judge me… they say that some of the greatest minds operated in untidy and/or messy office spaces. Or something like that.)

Anyway, as I was cleaning, I noticed something about the items I was throwing away, as most of the things scattered about the room were things I no longer needed. Only 16% of all the stuff I was getting rid of was regular trash. A massive 84% was recyclable material. I know… I did the math. (I guess those two semesters of stats in college paid off).

Sure it took a lot longer to separate everything into different containers for trash and paper and cans/bottles, but when I realized how much of the material was actually recyclable, it made me think about how much of an difference would be made on the Earth if everybody really took the time to do something as simple as recycling what they could instead of just lumping everything into one single garbage bag. Now, I realize that my ratio of trash to recyclables might be slightly wider than that of most others since I am quite the connoisseur of Diet Snapple Peach Tea, but nevertheless, I would (fairly confidentially) assume that most of what people throw out really isn’t non-renewable trash and could be remade into something new and wonderful.

I mean, I am not an ecologist, but I do think that little things like this make a difference.

On this day…
